Proganochelys

About Proganochelys

The first turtle-like animals appeared on the Earth about 200 million years ago. These small animals were covered with hard plates that connected to form a protective shell. Unlike modern turtles and tortoises, the Proganochelys could not pull its legs, tail, and head inside of its shell. Proganochelys was armed with a hard, spiked bone at the end of its tail to aid it in further protecting itself. Like modern turtles and tortoises, Proganochelys' hips and shoulders were inside of its rib cage. Proganochelys did not have teeth, but instead used its sharp beak to eat plants.
