About
Ouranosaurus
In 1966, a strange set of fossils was noticed laying in the sands of the Sahara Desert. Close examination revealed a dinosaur that was very similar to Iguanodon. However, there was one very important difference. This dinosaur had a sail-shaped flap of skin running along its back.
Ten years after its discovery, the dinosaur was named Ouranosaurus by paleontologist Philippe Taquet.
Scientists theorize that the sail-like structures found on many dinosaurs may have been used to regulate body temperature. Many of the dinosaurs are believed to have been cold-blooded. This means that they were not capable of regulating their own body temperature. A sail would have been useful to the animals in order to give them some control over their temperature. Heat from the sun would have collected in the sail and then carried by circulating blood to the rest of the body.
